DC Fandome 2021

Here’s everything missing from DC Fandome 2021

The DC Fandome 2021 event was held last weekend and contained many great reveals, including new trailers for The Batman movie, Gotham Knights, and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. However, there were many missing DC Fandome reveals that fans expected or have been basically confirmed, but haven’t been officially announced by DC Comics or Warner Bros — such as the expected Smallville animated series revival. Here’s everything major that should’ve been at the event.

What was missing from DC Fandome 2021?

DC Fandome 2021

The expected but missing panels and announcements at the DC Fandome 2021 event include:

SMALLVILLE ANIMATED SERIES

A possible Smallville 20th anniversary animated revival was rumored before the DC Fandome event, and when there was a big panel featuring stars Tom Welling (Clark Kent/Superman) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) along with multiple other members of the cast it seemed like the announcement of an animated series was imminent. It didn’t happen, but the panel ended with Rosenbaum promising to “see you soon.” Today, the actors confirmed that the Smallville animated series is indeed in the works, but is only “in the early stages.”

THE BATMAN HBO MAX SHOWS — PENGUIN, CATWOMAN, GCPD

In January 2021 it was confirmed that The Batman Gotham PD spin-off show was in production with a new showrunner, and just last month it was basically confirmed that further The Batman spin-offs based on Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell) were coming too. It was assumed, given the enormous popularity of Batman and hype for The Batman movie, those official announcements or reveals of these shows would come at Fandome — especially with The Batman’s release date just six months away. It didn’t happen.

SUPERGIRL MOVIE

It’s been long confirmed that the DCEU version of Supergirl (Sasha Calle), who will debut in The Flash movie in November 2022, will be getting her own movie at some point afterward — possibly as soon as 2023. It was even rumored that there would be a Supergirl HBO Max series instead and fans were expecting some sort of confirmation at DC Fandome. Supergirl briefly appeared in The Flash teaser trailer shown, giving the first official look at her costume outside of leaks, but no announcement was forthcoming.

SUPERMAN GAME

A new, proper Superman game has long been rumored and was originally presumed to be in the works at Rocksteady — the Man of Steel will indeed be in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, but won’t be playable presumably. It seems likely that if a Superman game is in development it’s more likely to be at Gotham Knights studio WB Montreal, which supposedly has multiple DC games in production. It was hoped that a further WB Montreal game like Superman would be announced at DC Fandome, but there was a match-3 puzzle RPG instead.

SUICIDE SQUAD AYER CUT

Another strong rumor for DC Fandome was that Warner Bros would announce the so-called “Ayer Cut” of 2016’s Suicide Squad. Zack Snyder’s Justice League was announced last Fandome to a great reaction and this year’s The Suicide Squad sequel was well-received, so a “David Ayer’s Suicide Squad” announcement for the similarly mangled movie would make a lot of sense — even the soundtrack is finished. Yet, no announcement.

FORTNITE/THE BATMAN CROSSOVER

One of the biggest shocks of DC Fandome was the removal of the Fortnite section, which was announced as featuring Epic’s Donald Mustard and was specifically advertised to suggest a crossover with The Batman movie. Instead, Fortnite was completely taken out of Fandome and the reveal of The Batman Who Laughs as the game’s next skin was just posted online the day before instead. The Fortnite x The Batman crossover is still surely coming — there are even LEGO sets after all — but may not get announced until closer to the movie’s release.
