How to conquer your fear in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

In Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey you’ll need to conquer your fear in order to progress through the world. When you’re in a state of fear, the game world will turn black and white while you’ll also be confronted by predatory hallucinations. It’s disorientating, but thankfully, fear can be overcome by way of managing your dopamine levels and by finding the ball of light.

Here’s our guide on how to conquer fear in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey:

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey fear explained

Fear will be triggered in baby hominids when they venture too far from their sanctuary, or in adult hominids when they’re exploring new territories. Elder hominids won’t face fear, so if you’re looking to venture far out into the game world, keep this in mind!

You can conquer your fear in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey by way of raising your dopamine levels. These are increased by investigating your environment, familiarizing your hominid with its surroundings, before venturing into the ball of light that will appear.

Increasing dopamine levels in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Enter intelligence mode (press Y) in order to begin focusing on the boxes/diamonds in your surroundings. You can then hold Y while focusing on a box/diamond in order to investigate it, which will either bring up a question mark if it’s an undiscovered item, or the relevant icon if you’ve previously discovered the relevant item.

As you investigate each of these boxes/diamonds, your dopamine level will increase. This is the meter surrounding the eye in the bottom-left corner of the screen.  When your dopamine meter fills, you’ll be asked to “conquer your fear.” A ball of light will appear on the screen, and in order to conquer your fear you must step into it.

What is the ball of light in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?

Unfortunately, this is a little fiddly, with you often seemingly stepping into the ball of light only for it to not register. If this is the case, try approaching the ball of light from a different angle, and eventually, you’ll be given a prompt to hold B in order to conquer your fear.

After conquering your fear, you can then explore the area of the map without triggering the hallucinations, allowing you to freely wander and discover more locations and items!
