Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey | How to evolve into a new species

Changing species is an important goal in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. Evolving into a new hominid is one of the most tangible signs of progress in the game, after all, the point is to get as close to humankind as possible. However, the conditions for evolving into a new species isn’t very apparent and doesn’t seem to be as easy as simply unlocking as many neuronals as possible and leveling up your tribe.

How do you evolve into new species in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?

Ancestors Species Change

As far as we can tell, changing species comes with the passage of time. Once you pass a certain year, you’ll progress to the next species. This means you can’t just grind out a ton of neuronals over a few generations and suddenly evolve. Instead, if you want to develop to a new species faster, you’ll need to pass more time.

You can add more time to your evolutionary leap by accomplishing certain tasks:

  • Making and using a tool for the first time.
  • Crafting and using a tool multiple times.
  • Killing an animal.
  • Eating a new kind of food.
  • Reinforcing a lot of neurals
  • Discovering new landmarks.

    Births.

All the above, and more will accomplish milestones and add to your evolution leap year total. The only thing you need to avoid is deaths caused by injuries or illness. Your tribe members will naturally die of old age, but if they die violently, then years are deducted off your year total when you evolve. You can offset this a bit by having lots of babies, but too many deaths can pretty much nullify your accomplishments for an evolutionary cycle.

The first species you’ll evolve into in Ancestors is Sahelanthropus Tchadensis at around the 9 million year mark. After that, expect an evolution every million to two million years. Evolving into Sahelnathropus isn’t too impressive, but the closer you make it to Homo sapiens, the more accomplishment you’ll feel.
