Assassin's Creed Leak

Former Ubisoft Dev Blames Assassin’s Creed Leak for Series Turmoil, But the Leaker Disagrees

Stanislav Costiuc, a former Lead Game Designer at Ubisoft, has called out an Assassin’s Creed leak from Kotaku back in December 2014. He believes that the AC Syndicate leak was part of the reason why the franchise has since steered away from “classic AC,” which Assassin’s Creed Mirage is attempting to bring back. However, the author of the piece, Jason Schreier, an established insider who now reports for Bloomberg, has answered these remarks by calling them “the biggest load of horses***.”

Assassin’s Creed leak turns into heated debate on leaks

Amidst GTA 6 being leaked apparently by the hacking group called Lapsus$ (as reported by our sister site PlayStation Lifestyle), Costiuc explains in a series of tweets (now deleted but archived as an image above) on how Schreier’s leak impacted future game development for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. He said in a tweet that his colleagues told him that “the overwhelmingly negative reception to the leak in the wake of problematic Unity release was a big factor in making sure the franchise direction steers as far away from classic AC as possible.” Furthermore in additional tweets (archived below), he adds that the leak demoralized the team and “essentially caused” the split between classic AC games and the more RPG AC games like Odyssey and Valhalla.

In response, Schreier in a thread on Resetera calls these comments “just about the biggest load of horses*** [he’s] seen today.” Not only does he say that comments to the leak were mainly positive, but that the primary reason for Assassin’s Creed turning into an RPG series was due to the “wildly negative reactions to Assassin’s Creed Unity for shipping unfinished.” Schreier even replied directly to Costiuc’s (now deleted) tweet, saying more or less the same thing. This led to Costiuc and Schreier having a fiery debate on Twitter, with Schreier asking Costiuc to check before sharing “harmful, wildly inflammatory office gossip from 2015” while Costiuc says that he is merely stating the sentiments of other developers on the Assassin’s Creed series which were not shared in interviews.

In other news, Nintendo has stopped account sign-ins through Facebook and Twitter, and a new Iron Man game has been confirmed by EA and Marvel.
