Assassin’s Creed Japan Might Be Next for the Franchise According to Theory

In more than a decade, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has brought gamers to many different locations and time periods in history. These include the Crusades in the very first Assassin’s Creed in 2017, to Ptolemaic Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Origins and Ancient Greece in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. There’s one specific time and place that the franchise has never explored, despite being the most desired amongst fans: Japan. However, a new theory has been proposed by a fan on Reddit, which could mean a possible Japanese setting for the franchise in the future.

It was initially reported by GameRant that a Reddit user known as DoktahManhattan posted an image of signs he discovered in the opening levels of Assassin’s Creed 3, which was originally released in 2012. The three symbols found by the Redditor displays the Egyptian’s Eye of Horus, the Greek alphabet’s letter signifying Omega, and the Japanese Shinto torii. It might not be mere coincidence that the Egyptian symbol is followed by a Greek symbol, and ending with a Japanese symbol.

Although the placement of the symbols might possibly be foreshadowing future settings in the franchise, it could also be simply an Easter egg of sorts. An Assassin’s Creed Japan would definitely please many fans, and that future could be arriving sooner than we expected. Last month, Ubisoft Canada Executive Creative Vice President Lionel Raynaud said that future technology could allow for multiple historical periods to be featured in a single title, where players would travel from one time period to another using the Animus.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is less than three months away now, and Ubisoft would most likely be focusing on that for the foreseeable future. It might also be the last Assassin’s Creed title in a while, as the company is preparing to employ a games-as-a-service model with weekly content to keep players occupied for a long time.
