The next installment in Ubisoft’s popular franchise, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, will arrive with many new features. These new features will distinguish it past titles, including taking a cue from Bioware with the addition of romance options and for the first time ever, players will be able to choose between a male or female character. However, now it seems that Ubisoft is saying that the game will employ a games-as-a-service type model.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz at E3 2018, Ubisoft EMEA executive director Alain Corre described Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as a “service-type product.” He clarifies it further by saying that “the idea with Odyssey is to create new content every week so that it’s a [lively] adventure for the fans.”
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Weekly Content Updates
He continues: “So there’s always something new, something fresh and something they can discover and appreciate. We want this Odyssey to be living, to always be fresh, so it’s a different way to create games this way.” That’s all he revealed, as Corre couldn’t give any details regarding what type of weekly content would be released for the upcoming game.
Corre only added that the post-launch content is being “planned for a long time.” We could see more of the revolving enemy bosses based on mythical Gods as seen in Assassin’s Creed Origin. Instead of the Egyptian pantheon, it could be the more familiar Greek pantheon this time around. Who wouldn’t want to test their mettle against the likes of Hercules or Hades?
The games-as-a-service model may be frowned upon in the games community when developers and publishers take advantage of the monetization model. However, if Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is anything like its predecessor, it could start changing the negative perception of the games-as-a-service model.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will not only allow romance options for the very first time in the franchise, as players will be able to romance both men and women no matter what gender they choose at the beginning of the game. It’s a much-needed step in the right direction for the franchise, that’s for sure.
