As you’re probably already aware, there’s a lot of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey news flying around right now. But what you probably don’t know is that Ubisoft has taken a leaf out of BioWare’s book in terms of romance and friendship, why? Well because Assassin’s Creed Odyssey romance options look to be a real, confirmed thing coming your way this year.
This news originally comes from IGN, who reports that the two playable characters, Alexios and Kassandra, will have “a wealth of romance-able characters, a decision narrative design director Mel MacCoubrey says will help personalize the experience for each player.” And with a game that is said to emphasize choice, we can see why the option to romance different NPCs was included.
MacCoubrey went on further to say, “with our focus on relatedness between the player and the game, we wanted a story that would impact people, so we wanted to tell a personal story.” She continued. “In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, we’re telling a story of a family that has been torn apart and a family tragedy. We thought it would be better to place those romances in the world, to have their own stories to be able to develop those stories further, instead of forcing an opinion on you as a player.”
We don’t want to say ‘hmm, this sounds a little like BioWare’ but hmm, this sounds a little like BioWare. Though that, of course, is one of the highest compliments when it comes to narrative-heavy RPGs, so if this new direction for the Assassin’s Creed game narrative is even a little like BioWare, we’re all for it.
However, just because you’re clicking the heart option to try to get into your new love’s pants, it won’t mean you’ll actually get it. With this new Assassin’s Creed, choices really do matter and so everything you do will be taken into account as you pursue people. But it’s like they say, the course of true love never did run smooth.
But what’s also very exciting about this news is that players can define their own romantic experiences in wildly different ways, meaning that yes, you can romance men and women no matter what gender you are. It shouldn’t be a surprise that gay romances will be available, especially if you know your Ancient History, but we’re glad to report about it anyway.
