Knockout City free-to-play

Knockout City Goes Free-To-Play and EA Is No Longer Publishing It

Knockout City – the action brawler – is going free-to-play this spring as the title approaches its first anniversary. Developer Velan hopes the move will “bring our game to millions of new players around the world, by removing the price tag entirely”. Alongside the free-to-play aspect, developer Velan Studios will self-publish the game, taking over from EA. When Knockout City launched last year, it was under the EA Originals’ label – the publisher’s indie program. It launched on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Knockout City is going free-to-play without EA

Velan thanked EA saying: “we couldn’t have introduced Knockout City to the world without the incredible support of EA Originals.” The title currently retails at $19.99 but is available on Xbox Game Pass and EA Play.

Velan’s shooter will go free-to-play alongside the launch of Season 6. Before that, the developers are celebrating the ‘greatest hits’ of Knockout City with Season 5. The new season – which will last 12 weeks in total – will see the return of Superpowers, Basketbrawl and more. Due to the impending free-t0-play aspect, the developers say the season will have “a little less content than some of our previous seasons”. There will not be a Brawl Pass, with fewer bundles and cosmetics available. No new maps or balls will be introduced, too. However, Velan promised this will all return with Season 6 in the spring.

For those who have already purchased the game, Velan says in-game rewards will be available. When Season 6 gets underway, loyal players will be rewarded with exclusive legendary cosmetics, XP boosts and 2,000 Holobux – the in-game currency. More details regarding Season 5: Greatest Hits, the upcoming Season 6 and free-to-play integration will come in the coming “days, weeks and months”.
