nes and snes classic systems out of production

NES and SNES Classic Are No Longer In Production

If you haven’t gotten your hands on a Nintendo Classic plug and play system yet, bad news: you no longer have the chance to get one of the elusive systems. The NES and SNES Classic systems are no longer in production, meaning if you don’t have one now, eBay may be the best option.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the chief operating officer of Nintendo, talked to the Hollywood Reporter earlier this week about the move:

“We’ve said that the current systems are the extent of our classic program,” Fils-Aime said. We’ve also been clear that, at least from an Americas perspective, these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it.”

Fils-Aime said that moving forward, Nintendo will be focusing on their online service for classic content, more specifically the NES games that are included with the service.

“The way that consumers will be able to continue participating with our classic content is going to be through Nintendo Switch Online, and we just released three new games (Ninja Gaiden, Wario’s Woods and Adventures of Lolo) from the NES generation onto that platform,” he said. “We look at that as the main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content.”

The NES Classic Edition was launched back on November 10 of 2016, selling 1.5 million units by the end of the year. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy and Mega Man 2 were among the games found on the system.

The SNES Classic was released a year later, adding the never before released Starfox 2 to the mix along with classic games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and more.

Both systems were re-released this past summer, with global sales reaching 10 million by October.
