Gamescom 2018: Call of Cthulhu Gameplay Trailer Investigates a Twisted Mansion

Fresh out of Gamescom 2018, Focus Home Interactive has revealed a brand Call of Cthulhu gameplay trailer, in which the game’s main character Edward Pierce travels to the creepy Hawkins Mansion. There he has tussles with the locals and investigates an incident at the mansion. And what’s worse, as this investigation continues and Pierce reaches closer to the truth, he’ll be putting both his life and his sanity at risk.

The gameplay trailer, which is taken from a beta version of Call of Cthulhu, apparently takes place at the beginning of Pierce’s overall investigation, in which he is looking into the deaths of the Hawkins family who own the twisted mansion on Darkwater Island. The trailer informs us that Pierce is a war veteran and a struggling alcoholic, so he already has his own personal demons before he even gets to the nightmarish Old Ones.

Players can explore the mansion in a first-person perspective, uncovering clues to aid Pierce’s investigation. The trailer starts with a tense encounter with the axe-wielding groundskeeper, Winchester, which shows the game’s multiple-choice dialogue system in action. This encounter can be resolved in a number of ways, such as intimidation, subterfuge, sneaking, reasoning, or just grabbing the axe out of the man’s hand. Decisions like this will most likely have various consequences throughout the game.

The main part of the trailer shows off one of the game’s crime scene reconstructions, which works like a more in-depth version of Batman: Arkham Knight‘s similar reconstructions. Players can examine details, explore the area, find clues, and try to put together exactly what happened. Unlike the last Batman game however, there is no single right answer and clues may be missed, although finding more aids your investigation. Unfortunately, in the case of Call of Cthulhu, getting closer to the truth can push Pierce closer to madness too.

You can check out the trailer below. Call of Cthulhu is being made by Cyanide, the team behind Blood Bowl, the Game of Thrones RPG, and the upcoming Space Hulk: Tactics and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. It currently has a release date of October 30, and will be out for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
