Nintendo Addresses 3DS XL And Smash Bros. Absence From E3

In addition to withholding major announcements regarding new Fire Emblem and Professor Layton 3DS titles from E3, Nintendo opted to unveil a redesign of their hardware and earth-shattering news about the next Super Smash Bros. just weeks after the expo in LA.

Why Nintendo? Just… why?

When asked that very question by IGN, Nintendo offered up an unsurprisingly unsatisfying answer, saying: “At E3 we had very specific announcements that we wanted to focus on.

“We had a lot of things to talk about, and we had to decide which things were most appropriate for each method of announcement. E3 is just one of the many opportunities for companies to make announcements, and we’re always looking for the most appropriate ways to both inform and surprise consumers.”

For some reason, I think announcing that Namco is working on the next Super Smash Bros. would have been a bit more "appropriate" than unveiling YouTube and Amazon Instant Video functionality for the Wii U. E3 is, after all, one of the largest gaming events of the year. Oh, and don't even get me started on the 3DS XL…
