Ghostbusters Afterlife JK Simmons: Who is Ivo Shandor?
JK Simmons appears briefly in Ghostbusters Afterlife as Ivo Shandor, the architect of most of the problems in the movies and a devout worshipper of series antagonist Gozer the Gozerian. He spends a few scenes in Ghostbusters Afterlife as a corpse but his ghost (or zombie corpse) seemingly returns when Gozer does, revealing the character to be none other than JK Simmons. Despite being such a devout worshipper played by a popular actor, Gozer is less than thrilled at Shandor’s deep devotion. Despite Shandor’s planning allowing Gozer to return twice, the god incinerates and tears him apart immediately.
Fans were first clued in to the idea that Ghostbusters Afterlife would delve more into the role of Ivo Shandor when one of the recent trailers revealed the name “Shandor Mining Company.” In the first Ghostbusters movie in 1984, Shandor didn’t physically appear but was the architect behind 550 Central Park West — the building in New York where Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) lived which became a temple for the dark Sumerian god Gozer. Shandor’s ghost was the primary antagonist of 2009’s semi-canonical Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which revealed a lot about the Gozer cult. His ghost may have been destroyed, but maybe it was reincarnated upon the return of Gozer in Somerville?
