Ghostbusters Afterlife Ending Explained: Is there a post-credits scene?

Ghostbusters Afterlife Ending Explained

There are two post-credits scenes in addition to the epic ending, which features the final defeat of Gozer the Gozerian by the main characters and the Ghostbusters and the return of Ecto-1 to New York.

After the Sumerian god Gozer, who caused all the trouble in the first movie, is reconstituted, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace) lead it back to their grandfather Egon Spengler’s farm — after working out that Egon had transformed it into one giant ghost trap, although clearly had problems with the electrics. The original Ghostbusters show up — Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Ackroyd), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) — and manage to distract Gozer long enough for Trevor to power the generators with a proton beam, trapping both Gatekeeper and Keymaster and removing Gozer from our dimension.

Aside from the Ghostbusters and family saying goodbye to the ghost of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) who had been haunting the farm, the final shot of the movie before the credits is of the Ghostbusters car Ecto-1 returning to New York, with the sirens going. This does suggest the Ghostbusters are back for good now. There are then two post-credits scenes. The first is basically a fun cameo from Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) with no plot significance, but the second involves Winston talking to Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) explaining how he still feels he is a Ghostbuster at heart, despite his successful business. It also reveals that Winston actually bought the former Ghostbusters firehouse building and parks Ecto-1 in there.

Will there be Ghostbusters 4?

The ending and final credits scene strongly suggest the possibility of Ghostbusters 4 as a proper sequel set in New York once again, with the remaining cast on hand. At the very least, it leaves the door open for more adventures of the original Ghostbusters (minus the departed Egon Spengler), as Ecto-1 and all the Ghostbusters equipment are back in the original building. It’s also possible that the original Ghostbusters 3 movie idea of having a new generation of Ghostbusters being trained by the originals could be on the cards too.

If Ghostbusters Afterlife wasn’t enough for fans, the Fortnite x Ghostbusters crossover recently started again, and the remastered version of the fantastic Ghostbusters: The Videogame is available now for anyone who wants to know what happened after Ghostbusters 2.
