Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a brand-new game featuring the wisecracking and dysfunctional superhero squad. It’s a single-player title, though many users are wondering which heroes they can play as. So, are there multiple Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy playable characters? Here’s the latest on choosing to control Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and Gamora as well as Peter “Star-Lord” Quill.
Does Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy let you choose which character to play?
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a single-player game in which users control Star-Lord, otherwise known as Peter Quill. Square Enix hasn’t announced the ability to control multiple playable characters; Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and Gamora are seemingly A.I. heroes.
It’s possible that additional Guardians will be playable during specific story sequences, though there doesn’t appear to be a character selection process. Although this is likely disappointing news for many, ultimately, it could be a good thing. Part of the reason that Marvel’s Avengers drew criticism was its “identity crisis” and spreading itself too thin. By placing focus on a single character — thus providing a more consistent gameplay and narrative experience —the game could be a more cohesive whole.
The Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy playable characters appear to be just Star-Lord for now. Since there isn’t a co-op mode, that also means no jumping into other players’ games and taking control of their A.I. Guardian teammates. Since demand is likely to be high, it is possible that future Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy DLC and/or free game updates could add this functionality.

Elsewhere in E3 news, Bethesda is bringing Redfall and Starfield exclusively to Xbox and PC. Both titles will also hit Xbox Game Pass on launch day.
