It’s time for another Retro Ad Replay article! This is the series where we head backwards in time to reminisce and celebrate the anniversary of some of the most significant moments in gaming. If you find yourself wanting more content like this, be sure to visit Mandatory.com.
In this December 20 edition of Retro Ad Replay, we’re taking a trip back 9 years to when Star Wars: The Old Republic first launched on PC. That’s December 20, 2011. Developed by BioWare Austin and published by EA, this MMO gave players the choice to become a warrior of the Sith or side with the Republic. There were unique stories for each, promoting the creation of multiple characters for the complete experience.
The GameRevolution Star Wars: The Old Republic review speaks highly of the game, ultimately awarding it a 3.5/5. Highlights include the way that “each class has a dedicated story,” characters have “full voice acting,” there being “tons of combat options and loot,” and that it’s “kind of like being on the edge of a planet being created right before you.”
Here’s a snippet from the GR review:
As a piece of consumable media, STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC is the Jedi-in-training’s wet dream. If you’ve ever heard of the annual Star Wars fan convention and thought “haha, that’s neat” and not “ew, gross,” then this game is for you. Drop your WORLD OF WARCRAFT subscription and starting sending checks to Bioware.
Likewise, if you’re a lapsed WORLD OF WARCRAFT player and your craving something similar enough to migrate your skills to, THE OLD REPUBLIC will certainly please. Even if you’re just curious about MMOs and you’d like to get your feet wet, THE OLD REPUBLIC is a great place to get in on the ground floor, because it’s ambitious enough to build up a large player base and the license and developer will keep those players around for quite some time.
Still, if you’re not really one for MMOs or you won’t have the time to level up a character, please move along. The Force is strong with this one, but not so strong that you should throw away your console and invest in a beefy PC.
