Best September 2019 Games | Hottest releases on PS4, Xbox, PC, and Switch

Summer may be reaching its end, but the onslaught of video game releases has just begun. Over the next 30 days, long-awaiting titles like Borderlands 3 and Code Vein are set to arrive alongside the next iteration in the Gears of War franchise and the return of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Switch. Fans of awesome-looking mecha have a promising title to look forward to, too. The following are all the best September 2019 games that PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC users should keep on their radars.

September 2019 Games | Gears 5

The Coalition’s next entry in the Gears of War franchise, Gears 5, will follow in the footsteps of Kait Diaz, an outside who is known to be of Locust descent. Players are tasked with discovering the whereabouts of Kait’s family before an all-out war breaks out across the world of Sera. A buddy will be able to join in on the ride thanks to the return of the series’ local split-screen co-op and online co-op modes.

Other welcome multiplayer features will include Escape, which will task fans with taking down enemy hives; Horde, which will see teams build defenses and unlock abilities in order to survive; and Versus, which will offer players over 10 traditional competitive modes to enjoy. Gears 5 debuts for Xbox Game Pass on September 6 and launches for all Xbox One and PC users on September 10.

September 2019 Games | Borderlands 3

borderlands 3 gameplay reveal, September 2019 Games

It’s been nearly five years since fans last received a full-fledged Borderlands game. Thankfully, Borderlands 3 seems like it’ll preserve a lot — perhaps too much — of franchise’s crude, cartoonish charm when it releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 13. The same core loop of accepting missions, killing bad guys, and obtaining loot will remain unchanged. Procedurally generated weapons will also return, as developer Gearbox Software has claimed that it will feature at least one billion guns.

New characters will be introduced alongside the ability to choose from up to three unique skills in battle. Amara’s fists are well-suited for players who like to get up close and personal, while Zane’s gadgets can take down foes from a distance. Seeing as how Borderlands 3 will allow fans to destroy psychos in a variety of remarkably different ways, there’s plenty of reason for fans to be excited.

September 2019 Games | Daemon X Machina

September 2019 Games

Daemon X Machina is a completely new IP from the minds behind God Eater 3 and Monster Hunter Stories that’s slated to release exclusively for Switch on September 13. After the moon collides with our planet, machines are given sentience and wish to wipe out humanity. As Outers, or mecha pilots, players are enlisted to participate in a brutal war between organic and inorganic life.

An array of promising features will be featured in the final product, including a four-player cooperative multiplayer mode, character customization, and the ability to commandeer enemy weapons in battle. These aspects combined with the title’s bright color palette and inviting art style may help stand it out from its contemporaries and amass a dedicated fan base this fall.

September 2019 Games | The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

September 2019 Games

Nintendo’s upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will release for Switch on September 20. Though the game will preserve the top-down perspective and narrative of the original 1993 title, it’ll include a few additions like semi-open environments to explore, a higher heart capacity, and customizable dungeons. Players won’t have to sacrifice precious item slots for their sword and shield anymore, thus hopefully allowing them more room to experiment with the tools in their arsenal.

Of course, the classic’s visuals have been overhauled with a beautiful toy-like aesthetic. Amiibo collectors should be pleased to know that they’ll be able to use their figures to unlock gameplay features and summon characters like Shadow Link. The Link’s Awakening remake looks like it’ll provide a ton of content for fans to get lost in. It may help make the wait for Breath of the Wild 2 a little less painful.

September 2019 Games | Code Vein

Blood Ogre, September 2019 Games

The Dark Souls-inspired Code Vein will finally release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 27. As members of a hidden society called Vein, fans are instructed to slaughter creatures called the Lost in order to acquire Gifts. While these rewards serve a narrative purpose, they also help players enhance their strength, weaken enemies, or unleash powerful attacks in battle.

Combat will be at the forefront of the experience and users will have to get a great feel for movement if they hope to defeat any of the title’s fearsome vampire bosses. Those who may be put off by the title’s unrelenting difficulty should rest assured knowing that it will include an online cooperative multiplayer feature and AI-controlled partners. Given how we probably won’t see FromSoftware’s Elden Ring for some time, Code Vein should hopefully serve as a worthy game to fill the gap.

As if the list above isn’t daunting enough, this September also sees the arrival of two highly anticipated expansions on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: Monster Hunter World‘s Iceborne and Destiny 2‘s Shadowkeep. The former debuts on September 6 while the latter debuts on September 17. It also sees games like the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch launch for PC and Switch on September 3 and September 20, respectively. Video game fans that feel overwhelmed now should know that next month is just the tip of the iceberg. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, The Outer Worlds, Death Stranding, and more are just around the corner.
