“Pilot” the Animus in the Modern Day Element of Assassin’s Creed Unity

Assassin's Creed Unity wowed us at this year's E3 for extensive interior environments, a massive-looking map, and some innovative new cooperative gameplay mechanics, but we left the show with no word on how the modern-day sequences would function in the game.

Thankfully, Ubisoft Montreal Senior Producer Vincent Pontbriant shared a few details with GamesTM, stating that the developer is "going a bit further than with Black Flag." That probably means things are going to get even more meta since Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag put players in mock-development studios where inter-office e-mails revealed both Animus developers inner thoughts and conflicts in addition to Abstergo's plans for world domination.

Pointbriant had the following to say about Unity's modern-day sequences:

We ended Desmond's cycles in Assassin's Creed III, and then we made Black Flag about an Abstergo employee being contacted by Assassins. So you played this third-person character in the present, and we wanted to go one step beyond that. We decided that you're actually, you the player, are the pilot of the Animus. So you start the game and then at some point you get contacted by the Assassin order to explore the memories of Arno through the Animus, and basically figure stuff out for them in the present. We made a few twists but we understand that htis is the seventh game, so the story is becoming complicated; as such, we wanted to reintroduce some of the main elements of the narrative in a different way.

GamesTM is a monthly magazine based in England. The full interview will be available in July, but we hope to have more on Assassin's Creed Unity throughout the summer as we near release.
