As House of the Dragon continues, the foundations are being laid for the show’s future. In particular, in episode 3 we saw the reintroduction of a character integral to House Targaryen’s history. We met the heir to the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s future husband, and the man who would be the father to three of her future children. Whilst viewers had seen a younger version of the character on screen before, this was the first time we saw him moving into his adulthood years.
Who does Rhaenyra Targaryen get married to in House of the Dragon?
If the series is to follow the works of George R. R. Martin precisely, Rhaenyra Targaryen will marry Ser Laenor Velaryon, the only son of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. In the first volume of Martin’s book Fire and Blood, Rhaenyra is not convinced by the match, saying that her “half brothers would be more to his taste”. After King Viserys threatens to remove her status as heir to the Iron Throne if she does not go ahead with the marriage, however, she agrees to wed the young Velaryon.
Rhaenyra and Laenor seemed to be very aware that their marriage was one of convenience, spending much of their time apart. They had three sons together: Princes Jacaerys ‘Jace’, Lucerys ‘Luke’, and Joffrey ‘Joff’ Velaryon. Though the Westeros history books state that Laenor was the children’s father, there were rumors at the time suggesting that the three sons were actually fathered by her secret lover, Harwin Strong. Each of the boys was born with brown hair, despite both Laenor and Rhaenyra’s light silver and golden locks. House of the Dragon will likely be able to give some clarity on those rumors as the series continues.
House of the Dragon continues Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
