Return to Monkey Island Release Date

Return to Monkey Island Announced, Release Date Coming This Year

Lucasfilm Games, by way of Devolver Digital, has surprisingly revealed the Return to Monkey Island release date window for the third act in the seminal Monkey Island franchise. This legendary series revolutionized adventure games in the early 1990s, and now the Monkey Island creators, Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, have returned to continue what they started.

When is the Return to Monkey Island release date?

According to the one-minute teaser trailer for Return to Monkey Island, the game will release sometime in 2022. That would be a surprise given how tight this release window seems to be, but Ron Gilbert sent out a tweet saying that he had been working on this game “for the past 2 years in complete secrecy,” so he and his team apparently had plenty of time to make the deadline.

As there is no concrete month for this release window, it would seem that Return to Monkey Island will release in late fall or winter seasons.

The trailer’s description describes this adventure game as “the long-awaited follow-up” to both Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2. Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox will be working with the developers to ensure the quality of this series reboot.

Gilbert originally revealed on his blog that he was announcing another Monkey Island game, but it was written on April Fools, so many people just chalked this up to a running gag in reference to a tweet he wrote in 2013 where he said that the announcement would arrive on April 1st. Lo and behold, it was actually true.

The trailer also reveals that Dominic Armato will be reprising his role as protagonist Guybrush Threepwood. The game’s art director, Rex Crowle, had worked on games like LittleBigPlanet, so you can expect the game to have an appropriately whimsical and colorful style. It’s unclear which platforms Return to Monkey Island will release for, but it’s probably safe to assume that it will release on PC if it’s anything like the first two classic games.

In other news, the developers for Halo Infinite have apologized for their lack of updates but the fans are running out of patience, and Xbox Series X seems to be casually available at Amazon and Walmart.
