IDW Publishing has revealed a Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie prequel comic series that will act as a bridge between the previous movie and its sequel coming next year. The Sonic 2 movie prequel will also focus on the stories of “new and returning characters,” suggesting that either the Sonic movie Tails or Knuckles will get their own origin stories in the comic. Here are all the details revealed about the Sonic 2 prequel comic.
What is the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie prequel comic about?
The recently announced IDW Sonic The Hedgehog 2 movie prequel comic, subtitled the pun-tastic “The Official Movie Pre-Quill,” will bridge the gaps between the first and second movies and tells the story of what Sonic has been up to since defeating Robotnik and returning to Green Hills. The official solicitation by IDW doesn’t reveal if the comic will resolve the end credits scene featuring Tails, but it does say it will feature stories covering “new and returning characters starring in Sonic The Hedgehog 2,” which strongly suggests Tails, Robotnik, and maybe even Knuckles.

The tentative release date for the Sonic 2 prequel comic is April 2022, which is the same time as the new movie’s release date so it seems unlikely to be any later than that. The solicitation says that both Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) will return, and it sounds like Sonic will trying to sort out trouble entirely of his own making. The writer is Gale Galligan, who contributed to the 30th anniversary special comic.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is still nearly a year away and there hasn’t been a trailer as of yet, but thanks to some leaked photos fans did get their first look at the movie’s version of Knuckles earlier this year. In more gaming-related Sonic news, the new Sonic game due out sometime next year will likely be called Sonic Rangers, and Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be out in September.
