Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a brand-new take on the ragtag band of heroes, though it stays true to its roots by channeling the comic book series’ best run. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning are responsible for creating the 2008 series responsible for popularizing the now-iconic team composition. The new Guardians of the Galaxy title features Abnett’s blessing and involvement, ensuring that long-term fans should get a lot out of the original video game narrative.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an “all-new story” that takes inspiration from the 2008 Abnett and Lanning comic book run. The team composition and setup are the same, though the Guardians will embark on a new adventure with an alternate villain in Lady Marguerite Hellbender.

The Guardians of the Galaxy game is “absolutely in the spirit of what these characters are,” according to Abnett. Comic book fans widely consider the 2008 run co-created by the author to be the beloved series’ highpoint. Seemingly fans aren’t alone, as this run also serves as the basis for the MCU and video game adaptations. Different members have taken up arms as Guardians of the Galaxy within comics, though Abnett and Lanning’s core team still endures in other mediums.

With a firm grasp of the series’ roots, the Guardians of the Galaxy game story has a strong foundation. Upon that, the developers are constructing a new adventure for the familiar team to embark on. During the debut gameplay demo, the Guardians aim to swindle Lady Hellbender; it’s an original scheme separate from the comics, though true to the scrappy anti-heroes’ nature.

The story will also be somewhat flexible, as players get to make various in-game dialogue choices. These can result in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy taking branching paths, which is certainly new. Although the Guardians are still very much an ensemble cast, the game places its focus on Peter Quill. Guardians of the Galaxy is a single-player game and Star-Lord is the only playable character.
