Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart artist intentionally made Rivet ‘beefier’ than Ratchet

A character artist who worked on the PS5 exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has said he intentionally made deuteragonist Rivet’s arms “beefier,” with the end result being that the new Lombax looks more “jacked” than the series’ hero Ratchet.

Xavier Coelho-Kostolny, a 3D character artist whose credits include Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man, responded to a viral tweet pointing out the size of Rivet’s arms. In the original tweet, Sony Santa Monica Studio’s Ivanna Liittschwager noted “no one told me rivet was jacked” in reference to a screenshot of the character’s arms.

Coelho-Kostolny then chimed in with the reveal that he was responsible for the design decision, tweeting: “This is my fault. Seriously. I specifically made her arms beefier than Ratchet’s.”

The artist then went on to further describe the process behind the Rivet design “In general she’s more muscular and has a slightly heavier frame despite sharing a lot of animations,” he tweeted. “I wanted to push it further with thicker limbs and making her heavier overall, but didn’t have the opportunity.”

This isn’t the first time that Rift Apart’s artists have admitted that Rivet’s design was intended to appeal to a particular crowd. “Even though a lot’s changed since I was on the project, I’m very happy I was able to contribute in some small way to the Furry Awakening that’s going to happen when the new Ratchet & Clank drops,” he tweeted back in 2020. Sol Brennan, who also provided art for the game, replied: “We absolutely knew the porn that it would spawn. And this fueled us more.”

In other news, Final Fantasy Origin’s debut trailer managed to use the word “chaos” in 47% of its voice lines. The Xbox Mini Fridge was also revealed, and it’s a real thing that you’ll be able to buy later this year.
