No Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered local co-op, developers say

There will be no Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered local co-op according to the game’s developers. That’s right — if you were hoping to play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered on your couch with your friends, you’ll be disappointed to hear that it has online-only multiplayer.

“As we have introduced in official broadcasts, this product does not support offline multiplayer,” the development team stated in a machine-translated tweet (via @Toadsanime). “For development reasons, it is necessary to select either offline or online, so we selected online multiplayer so that more people can play.”

To understand what that means, we need to head a little bit back in time. The original Game Cube version had offline multiplayer, but there was a catch — you needed a Game Boy Advance handheld for each person who wanted to play in the same game together, up to a maximum of four people. This made multiplayer a rather expensive prospect if your friends all didn’t own the consoles.

This upcoming remaster, however, is handling things a little differently. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered is coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. This simultaneous launch will include Cross-Play and that’s not all — there will also be a “Lite” edition that allows you to purchase one copy of the game and have your other three friends play with you for free.

That said, there will be no Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered local co-op. iOS and Android players might not have to pay anything extra for an online service since they’d use Wifi or a data connection, but PS4 players would need a subscription to PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch players would need a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.

Considering the ever-growing size of televisions and the fact that all gameplay takes place on the same screen, the lack of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered local co-op seems like a strange omission by the developers. Here’s hoping that they add this feature into the game in a post-launch patch.
