Rumor: Far Cry 6 could be a Far Cry 3 prequel featuring Vaas

Far Cry 6 has been leaked on the Hong Kong PlayStation Store, all but officially confirming that the game is on its way and will star The Mandalorian and Better Call Saul actor Giancarlo Esposito. However, a new theory has also suggested that the new Far Cry will actually be a prequel, telling the story of Far Cry 3 villain Vaas.

The theory stems from IGN’s Joe Skrebels, who has pointed out that Diego — a character shown in Far Cry 6‘s PlayStation Store listing — has the same eyebrow scar as Michael Mando’s portrayal of Vaas in live-action skits. Mando also provided the voiceover work for Vaas in Far Cry 3, along with appearing alongside Esposito in Better Call Saul.

Vaas didn’t have the eyebrow scar in Far Cry 3, but Mando’s portrayal of the character in the live-action ‘Vaas Montenegro Experience’ video series did feature the facial marking. A comparison can be seen below:

This theory was also recently touched on by Michael Mando himself, who suggested he’d reprise the role “very soon” in a Reddit AMA.

“Vaas is my spirit animal – having co-created that character is something that will always be dear to me,” Mando said. “I still get recognized as Vaas, and I still feel the outpouring of love for that character – makes me very happy. Who knows… maybe I will reprise the role very soon?”

Vaas is Citra’s brother in Far Cry 3, though little is known about their relationship or their background. Far Cry 6‘s listing states that Esposito’s character, Anton Castillo, is Diego’s father. If this theory is correct, it would mean that Diego Castillo would become Vaas Montengro between the events of Far Cry 6 and Far Cry 3. It might be a little complicated, but this is also a series that has featured neon dinosaurs, so it’s not a far stretch to imagine Ubisoft throwing a curveball into Vaas’ backstory.

Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed any information related to Far Cry 6, though will reveal more during the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on July 12. It’s likely that we’ll receive a new trailer for the game during the presentation, which will presumably clear up whether or not this new theory is correct.
