Quantic Dreams will publish its own games from now on

In the past, Quantic Dream has primarily partnered with Sony for publishing. However, according to a statement on the studio’s official website, that will not longer be the case. Bolstered by the success of the Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human PC ports, Quantic Dream will self-publish its titles in the future.

Quantic Dream’s first two games, Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Fahrenheit, launched on multiple platforms. However, the studio has worked closely with Sony since the 2010 release of Heavy Rain. That formula seemed to bring the studio success, as Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human all went on to sell millions of copies each.

Quantic Dream’s plans to self-publish don’t seem like a split between the studio and Sony. Instead, the blog post detailing the decision makes it seem as if this is the logical next step. In addition to self-publishing its own games, the blog mentions that Quantic Dreams will be looking to support burgeoning studios as well.

In the blog statement, the studio went on to say:

“This new venture will allow us to make decisions in total independence, and to address the technological and strategic opportunities of next-generation platforms. It will also allow us to help other developers, by providing investment and development support, so that they can fully express their talents. We want to support creators of original projects and help them, in turn, to achieve their vision and offer quality, ground-breaking experiences.

This is more than an evolution — it is a transformation. We are doing this to preserve our freedom and our independence, to continue working on innovative and even more ambitious projects, to address greater challenges, and to create the unexpected. Quantic Dream will never be just another studio. We want to face new horizons, to keep our passion alive, and keep trusting in the idea of making games that are different.”

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the studio and David Cage, Quantic Dream does release some very unique games with strong narratives. It’s always great to see studios that march to a different beat see their efforts rewarded. I’m excited to see what the studio comes out with next.
