Trading hacked Pokemon is crashing Nintendo Switches

Trading hacked Pokemon is causing people’s Nintendo Switch consoles to crash. A few innovative bad guys have created an attack using glitched Pokemon via Surprise Trade, but there’s a way to keep your Pokemon Sword and Shield save safe.

The /r/NintendoSwitch subreddit highlighted a tweet by the dataminer @Kaphotics who described the problem.

“Beware!” the tweet began. “There’s a bug in Sword/Shield that can crash your game if you receive a maliciously crafted Pokémon via Surprise Trade. It’ll crash your game when you try to access online features (via Y-COM), preventing online interactions until a patch is released.”

Thankfully, trading hacked Pokemon will only cause a temporary inconvenience to players.

“Your save data won’t be corrupted; the Pokémon you received from Surprise Trade is waiting to be received and will crash when the game tries to receive it,” @Kaphotics said in a folow-up tweet. “Can’t launch any online features. It’ll also crash if received via trade, but only once — just release it afterwards.”
