John Romero teases new FPS game (and no, it’s not Daikatana)

Legendary game developer John Romero has teased a new FPS game—and no, it’s not a Daikatana remake. One of the minds behind the original DOOMQuake, and Wolfenstein games is still very much involved with game development and he shows no signs of letting up.

Romero recently took part in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on the /r/pcgaming subreddit. A variety of topics were discussed, and of course someone asked him if he’s working on something new. The answer was a bit vague, but nonetheless tantalizing.

“How do you feel about the new Doom series?” asked /u/CoreAffinity in the John Romero AMA. “And would you ever create a new fps in the likeliness of Quake?”

“I really like the new DOOM 2016 and from what I can see of Eternal, it’s going to be a winner as well,” Romero replied. “And, yes, I do have a design for an FPS in the style of DOOM/Quake.”

Of course, people couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask him about Daikatana, a game that had its fair share of controversy. Without delving too deeply into gaming history, Daikatana was heavily hyped back in the day and ultimately ended up being an okay game rather than the amazing, groundbreaking experience that some people had expected it to be. It quickly became a joke in the PC gaming community, and according to John Romero, the stigma still remains.

“I’ve gotten the question about remaking Daikatana, or making a sequel to it, but there is just no viability to the idea,” he replied to a question asking if he’d ever remake this shooter with modern technology. “When Daikatana came out, the industry reviled the game and trashed it in all forms of media. Even though it’s been 20 years, the stigma hasn’t gone away. There are many people who love the game and ask me about this, but there’s no publisher that would pay for a sequel or remake (that I know of).”

John Romero is working on something and it’s going to be a shooter. What that something is will be a bit of a mystery for now, although we can be pretty sure that it’s not going to be Daikatana Remastered.
