Doom Eternal demons list new returning

Doom, Rage studio director Tim Willits steps down

Doom, Rage, and Quake director Tim Willits will step down from his role at id Software after 24 years. This year’s QuakeCon, the developer’s annual celebration of its games, will be his last.

“After QuakeCon I will announce my future plans, where I am going, and what new exciting things I am doing. Stay tuned,” Willits wrote on Twitter. “All of the games currently in development are in very good hands, my departure will not affect any planned releases,” he said.

Willits has been with id Software since 1995 when he applied to the company using custom made Doom levels. Willits went on to work on games like Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, and Doom 3. When the company was bought out by ZeniMax, Willits stayed with id Software and was the creative director on the modern Doom remake and Quake Champions. Although Quake Champions didn’t quite hit as hard as other multiplayer games, Doom sparked a resurgence for the series.

Bethesda told GameSpot of his departure: “We want to thank Tim for his amazing 24 years at id Software. He has been an invaluable member of the Id Software team, and the Bethesda family, through his incredible work on franchises like Quake, Rage, and Doom and a fan-favorite at QuakeCon for decades. All of us here at Bethesda wish Tim the best in his future endeavors.”

Willits will attend QuakeCon in Dallas, Texas later this month from July 25 to July 28. The event will commemorate Doom’s 25th anniversary with a set of themed events and developer panels. Much of the celebration will also be in preparation for Doom Eternal’s November 22 launch.

Willits’ departure marks the last high-profile person to leave id Software who has been there since the beginning. John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack have all since left the company.
