Pikmin 3 Was Originally In Development For Handhelds

While Pikmin 3 has had a long journey to Wii U, we didn't know where the road took our leaf and flower-headed armies, until now. Shigeru Miyamoto spoke with 4Gamer about why 3DS and DS versions of the garden-strategy game just didn't work.

"We were doing prototype tests of Pikmin for DS and 3DS but it turned into unit management with only the touch pen and no matter what it just didn't seem like Pikmin," Miyamoto stated. "We concluded that Pikmin is a game that revolves around action based on its controls and the strategy sits on top of that. Although there are elements that are built on the strategy, there are other overall things that have to be well considered. This complete experience is an important element of Pikmin."

Miyamoto goes on to say that the first Pikmin game was just focused on easing people into controlling the action in 3D. "Pikmin 3 may seem difficult on first glance but once you try the controls, it's easy." It's totally true too! We'll have our review of Pikmin 3 for you later this week.
