Guild Wars 2's endgame has had trouble keeping the game's playerbase active. In order to address the concern, ArenaNet is reshaping its model for update frequency and delivery.
Speaking to Gamerzines, lead content designer Mike Zadorojny said:
We’re doing three weeks [updates] currently, but now we’re pushing to two weeks,
He added:
If we can push this, if we can add content every two weeks that is engaging to the players, then really it’s almost like a TV show at that point. It’s kind of stay tuned until next week for the thrilling conclusion of…That’s where our goal is, and it’s really fascinating when you have an entire studio dedicated to pulling off.
Although this is a good way to entice players to log in more frequently, it has problems of its own. Most if not all of the regularly-added content is temporary, such as the Super Adventure Box that came out in April. These amusing additions are added for a few weeks before they're permanently removed from the world of Tyria. There are content updates that bring new dungeons and gear but they're far more uncommon and don't fall under the umbrella of the two-week update cycle.
Guild Wars 2 continues to chug along with an estimated 400k active players left of its over 3 million copies sold, and until its promised expansion is released it will likely continue to lose players who don't find the revolving door content model attractive.
