The presence of the Zelda clone Genshin Impact during ChinaJoy 2019 sparked chaos at the Sony booth. Many fans accuse the game of being a blatant replica of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and expressed their anger through several means when Sony promoted miHoYo’s game.
Sony recently revealed its intent to publish Genshin Impact on PlayStation 4 in 2020. Originally announced for PC, Android and iOS, Genshin Impact was instantly labeled as a Breath of the Wild clone, but the peak of the outrage only happened a few days ago.
According to CCN, a furious man smashed his PlayStation 4 as a sign of disapproval while the crowd stared in disbelief. It’s highly doubtful that this move will make Sony rethink its decision about porting the Zelda clone Genshin Impact to the PlayStation 4, but this angry gamer surely managed to get his point across, although at the expense of his console.
Other tweets go on to include insults for both miHoYo and Sony, including personal attacks and death threats. Photos from Sony’s ChinaJoy 2019 booth show an enraged crowd and a lot of excited bird-flipping going on. A Link cosplayer even made it to the booth, surely aiming to stir up the hornet’s nest a bit.
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but that saying doesn’t bode well when it comes to video games. It’s obvious that Genshin Impact takes some inspiration from Breath of the Wild, from its whimsical open world to the anime graphical style, but claiming that it is a straight-out clone seems exaggerated.
Genshin Impact features a character system based on miHoYo’s previous game, Honkai Impact 3rd. You unlock new characters and can freely switch between them from a previously selected group of four. The closed beta offered 11 different characters, but the developers are aiming for 30 in total. The game’s in-depth action combat system allows you to control seven natural elements for combos and puzzle-based challenges.
Genshin Impact‘s release on PC, PS4, Android and iOS is scheduled for 2020.
