Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition coming to Switch

Pillars of Eternity Switch version announced for this year

When it was first released, Pillars of Eternity gave role-playing fans a taste of an old-school CRPG that they hadn’t had in a while. Now, the fans can take this classic RPG experience on the go as Obsidian Entertainment has announced that a Pillars of Eternity Switch port is coming on August 8. It will also be the “Complete Edition” that launched on consoles in 2017.

Originally funded through a Kickstarter campaign, Pillars of Eternity first launched on PC back in 2016. Obsidian then released the Complete Edition of the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August of 2017. Now, two years after that, they’re finally bringing it to Nintendo Switch.

The Pillars of Eternity Complete Edition comes with all the additional content added to the PC version. This includes updates such as an increased level cap, expanded party AI, UI updates, and new difficulty levels. More importantly, it comes with the game’s expansion two packs, The White March: Part 1 and Part 2.

When it originally launched Pillars of Eternity‘s Kickstarter, Obsidian pitched the game as a spiritual successor to old school CRPGs such as Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. As such, the game carries a heavy Dungeons and Dragons influence in both its design and mechanics.

To encourage different approaches to beating the game, Obsidian made the unique decision to make leveling and experience points come solely from completing quests. This means that the game rewards non-violent approaches just as much as those based on combat. For those who did want to use a combat oriented approach, it implemented a tactical real-time with pause system reminiscent of the game’s it took inspiration from.

The return to a more classic style resonated with many players and a sequel was eventually green lit. Obsidian released Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire on PC in 2018, and will also be bringing it to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch this year.
