Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was released on PC in 2018 and on Xbox One and PS4 at the start of 2020. The game was also due to come to Nintendo Switch but after several delays, publisher Versus Evil has finally announced this version of Pillars of Eternity 2 has been canceled.
Why has Pillars of Eternity II been canceled on Nintendo Switch?
Versus Evil revealed they were canceling the Nintendo Switch version of the game on their Discord channel, as noticed by Reddit. The statement simply read: “Unfortunately, after much deliberation, we have decided not to move forward with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire for the Nintendo Switch”. No reason was given for the cancellation but after several delays and months of radio silence from both the publisher and develop Obsidian Entertainment, the decision is not surprising.
A potential reason for the cancellation could be the issues faced by the Switch port of Pillars of Eternity thanks to the console’s hardware limitations. Versus Evil confirmed last year that they would no longer be updating the Switch version as the game had “reached a limit on what we can do with our updates to the game and have exhausted the options left to us from the PC original in regards to the limitations of the hardware we are working with”. The publisher acknowledged this would “leave issues present” in the game but they felt unable to make any more progress. As Pillars of Eternity II was a larger game than its predecessor, it seems like the game would only have faced even more issues.
In other news, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer lead has left 343 Industries. Andrew Witts has said he will take some time off before moving on to his next project, which is yet to be revealed. Elsewhere, the Nintendo eShop is the latest shopfront to be suspended in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
