Hideo Kojima fires shots at battle royale genre, doesn’t want to make his own

There is a reason why developers have created their own takes on the Fortnite and PUBG style of games. Investing in the battle royale genre is profitable when done correctly. Despite the genre’s potential to generate a ton of revenue, the mind behind the Metal Gear Solid series and Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, says he will not be making a battle royale of his own during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

According to Patrick Shanely of The Hollywood Reporter, not only did Kojima say he wasn’t going to venture into the world of battle royales, he “took a shot” at Fortnite. “The easiest way to make money is to make a game where everyone is on an island trying to shoot each other,” says Kojima. “I don’t want to make that.”

This remark seemed to resonate with the audience at the panel as they gave “big applause,” according to Shanely. If you were hoping for Kojima to step away from his wild storytelling to make a profitable battle royale, you will have to kiss those dreams goodbye.

Kojima’s latest game Death Stranding is set to launch on November 8, 2019, exclusively for the PS4. Back in May, the box art for Death Stranding was teased by Kojima. However, the Metal Gear Solid creator took to Twitter recently revealing the official box art for both the standard edition and the steelbook.

In Death Stranding, you’ll play as Sam Bridges roaming across a wasteland populated by otherworldly creatures and attempt to save the world from extinction. The game features an all-star cast including Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Lea Seydoux (Spectre), and Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman).
