An industrious and inventive modder has created a Banjo-Kazooie Wind Waker mod. If you’re a bit confused as to what this might be, it is very simply a mod that takes the characters and gameplay of the N64 game Banjo-Kazooie and places them into the world of the classic GameCube title The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It’s as wild as it sounds!
Officially titled The Legend of Banjo-Kazooie: The Bear Waker, this Banjo-Kazooie Wind Waker mod was created by Mark Kurko of Kurko Mods, a man that appears to have a particular proclivity for making N64 ROM hacks. From what we’ve seen so far, it seems like the mod is running pretty well. The latest trailer for the mod opens with Banjo-Kazooie running up a hill, revealing the scenery of the island from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker that we all know and love.
The trailer then quickly cuts to several different scenes. They show Banjo-Kazooie running up a road and collecting some eggs, opening a treasure chest on a stone pillar, and hitting a switch to reveal one of the game’s many, many collectibles. The trailer continues to quickly show off several familiar locations from Wind Waker with the obvious distinctions of having downscaled graphics for an N64 engine and enemies from the Banjo-Kazooie games, instead of the bad guys from Zelda.
Kurko Mods says that the Banjo-Kazooie Wind Waker mod will be available “sometime in July 2019.” That, of course, hinges on whether or not they can continue to make the mod without attracting the ire of either Rare or Nintendo’s legal departments, the latter of which particularly frowns on many a fan-made game.
