Kingdom Hearts 3 sales beat Resident Evil 2 in Japan

Kingdom Hearts 3 sales have beaten Resident Evil 2 in Japan, with Square Enix’s long-awaited sequel ranking ahead of the survival horror remake for the week. Both games made their debut in the Japanese game sales charts, with Kingdom Hearts 3 greatly outselling Capcom’s latest. While Resident Evil 2 has outpaced Resident Evil 7 in its first week on sale, it has shifted far fewer units than Resident Evil 6 did back in 2012.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has sold 610,077 copies between January 21–27, according to the latest Media Create Sales chart (via 4Gamer), compared to the 252,848 shifted by Resident Evil 2. This ranks it behind Kingdom Hearts 2‘s first-week sales, which sold 737,652 copies, but also makes it the second fastest-selling Kingdom Hearts game in the series’ history.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil 2 still had an impressive showing, but struggled to match the surprising highs of Resident Evil 6. Considering the tepid critical response to RE6, it still managed to shift 634,933 copies in its first wek on sale. This almost triples the sales generated by the RE2 remake, despite the latter having been warmly received while the former was widely derided at the time of its release.

However, the Media Create Sales figures only track physical copies sold. This means that Resident Evil 2 could have generated plenty more sales on PC, while only a digital Xbox One version was sold in the region. Similarly, Kingdom Hearts 3‘s digital sales will have likely tipped it past Kingdom Hearts 3.
