Fighting game fans will be happy to hear that Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play is something that is being looked into by its developer. The upcoming eleventh core entry in the viscerally violent franchise is all set to come out in April of this year and is launching on four platforms simultaneously for the first time. However, splitting a fighting game across four systems may very well negatively affect the potential pool of players, so the question has to be asked: Will we be getting Mortal Kombat 11 crossplay?
Speaking to Wccftech, NetherRealm Studios game designer Derek Kirtzic stated that the ability to play the game against players on other platforms is something that they’re certainly looking into. I’m sure that many developers have had the same thought over the years, but we’re seeing a recent resurgence in the possibility of cross-play thanks to games like Rocket League finally getting the green light to square up against players on other platforms.
Unfortunately, all we know for certain is that NetherRealm Studios is open to the possibility and that it’s something the team is exploring. With that said, there are still a lot of unknown quantities when it comes to Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play. While the developers might want to do it, Sony has only recently loosened up about the possibility of cross-platform gaming with their competitors, and that move may not have been anticipated by NetherRealm. The addition of such a feature might not be possible this late in the game’s development, although that’s not to say that we couldn’t get it at a later date.
The potential for Mortal Kombat 11 cross-play is further enhanced by the fact that the game is running on the Unreal Engine, a platform that’s right up there with Unity in its ability to run on pretty much anything more powerful than a smart fridge. This engine may also allow them to take advantage of the generous benefits currently being offered by the Epic Games Store. If there’s one thing we can be certain of, it’s that the devs will be calling it “Krossplay” on the menu.
