Super Mario 3DS Has No StreetPass, But Does Have Gyro-Controls

That loveable old scamp Miyamoto is up to his old tricks again. This time he's trying to innovate the upcoming Super Mario 3DS by adding a gyro-control system to it to make up for the fact that there's only one analog stick. But why not just have another analog stick? Solo circle pad design turned out to be a big mistake for the PSP and they've rectified it with the upcoming NGP. Maybe we should let him explain, as he did via The Telegraph:

Sometimes people ask why the 3DS isn't double stick. One is normally used to control the camera, but having the gyro sensor you can replace the analogue stick by moving the console, which is very intuitive.

Okay, that's great that it's "intuitive", but what about when my arms get tired from moving all over the place to get a good view of the terrain? Maybe Nintendo's next handheld should be the DS3D2, for two analog sticks (only after making the 3DS-XL, of course). Of course, they may run into a legal snag with George Lucas, as I'm pretty sure that's a Star Wars robot.

Miyamoto went on to explain that he couldn't come up with a good way to use the new StreetPass system with the game and that there would be no compatibility "unless a spectacular idea comes to mind".

He then talked about how the 3D features would improve the overall platforming experience:

With floating platforms it can be really difficult to judge the distance. But the depth in the 3D helps you evaluate those tricky jumps.

Super Mario 3DS will be released sometime in 2011, though we're not too sure when exactly yet. It was described by Shigeru himself as "a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64", but that's about all he's saying until E3.
