The Super Mario Bros. animated movie was due to hit theaters this holiday season, but that’s no longer the case after it was delayed. In a message to fans, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed he had held discussions with co-producer Chris Meledandri and that they had decided to postpone the movie’s release until next year.
When will the Super Mario Bros. animated movie be released?
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

Little else is known about the Super Mario Bros. movie, including whether that will be its official title. Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind Despicable Me and Minions, will be making the movie, which will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. A number of well-known faces will be taking on voice acting roles, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong. Long-time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will also be providing undisclosed voices in the movie.
In other news, the Xbox Series X|S became the best-selling US console in terms of dollar sales in March despite ongoing console shortages. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in terms of units. Elsewhere, Diablo Immortal will have cross-play and cross-progression between mobile and PC platforms when it’s released at the start of June.
