Project Cafe May Use the Nintendo 3DS as a Controller

Are you excited? You really should be. One thing the lengthy console-life cycles have done is severely limit the excitement and fervor new hardware gives the video game industry and market. Nothing sells like some new tech.

While we can be sure that Nintendo's upcoming Wii successor, codenamed Project Cafe, will stoke the fires of the gaming world at E3, we can't be sure about how exactly the new console will control. Rumors suggest the controller will come with its own HD touchscreen that gets gaming streamed to it from the home base console.

This of course is in addition to the return of the Wii-mote, also rumored to be compatible in some fashion with Project Cafe. All this talk about backwards compatibility, private screens for each player, and alternative control schemes has me thinking about gaming the way it was a couple of generations ago.

I'm talking about the Gamecube Game Boy Advance Link cable. You'll probably only remember a handful of games that used this compatibility, though. I remember one very distinctly: The Legend of Zelda Four Swords Adventures.

I was the one kid on the block who invested in enough link cables to play this game with my friends. Of course, they all came equipped with their own Game Boy Advance units, but we'd crowd around my Gamecube to clone Link three times over. Purple Link was the loser by the way.

These fond memories are why I'm not surprised in the least to hear about the possibility of the Nintendo 3DS being used as a controller. Attendees to a French 3DS presentation were treated to a few words by Shigeru Miyamoto regarding the possible connection that players could make between their 3DS and the next home console from Nintendo.

Be on the lookout for further information about Project Cafe as the new console has been announced officially and will appear at E3 in a "playable" form.
