Far Cry 5 Service Not Available

Far Cry 5 Loot Boxes Aren’t Happening; Microtransactions Confirmed

Now, this is a positive step. Far Cry 5 loot boxes, simply put, aren’t included in the upcoming Ubisoft open-world game. Microtransactions are still rearing their ugly head, but will be limited to cosmetic items and shortcuts to unlock the best weapons and vehicles.

A Ubisoft rep (via PC Gamer) confirmed that Far Cry 5 loot boxes and microtransactions based on chance wouldn’t be included in the game. In essence, what you see, is what you get. After the controversy surrounding the likes of Star Wars Battlefront 2, it marks a welcome change to see AAA developers and publishers outright rejecting the option to include it.

Microtransactions, should you wish to use them, come in the in-game form of silver bars and are used to buy “prestige weapons, vehicles, clothes, and skins.” For those of you who don’t want to go the real-money route, silver bars will be able to be found at outposts in the world of Hope County, but probably not the extent needed for some of the game’s better items.

As of writing, it is uncertain the price and quantity of silver bars on the Ubisoft storefront in Far Cry 5, nor how many silver bars you’ll need to part with to get the items you’re craving. That should all become much clearer upon the game’s release on March 27.

It can feel a little skeezy to applaud Ubisoft for doing the bare minimum (i.e. not include something that has gained gamers’ ire for many months now) but it’s undoubtedly a move in the right direction now we know Far Cry 5 loot boxes won’t be a thing. Microtransactions should be offered for those who want to improve their experience or to serve as a crutch, not used as something that is needed because large swathes of content is hidden behind it.
