The Japanese publisher of Mario and The Legend of Zelda has confirmed that June saw the 5 millionth Nintendo 3DS sale. Nintendo cited the NPD Group for the figure and restated the impact of their core franchises in moving the handheld device out the door.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D joined the likes of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land as one of the system's Million Unit Movers, settling in third behind 1.75M units of go-karting and 2.1M units of jumping on Goombas in 3D.
In addition, Nintendo noted that two of the top five and nine of the top 25 software spots went to games on Nintendo platforms, while Nintendo held down a 75% market share for portable hardware in the US for the second month in a row. This is certainly good news for the company following barren financial results earlier in the year. I know I've been playing more of my 3DS thanks to the likes of Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.
Nintendo was sure to reiterate that the Nintendo 3DS XL, announced a few weeks ago, is landing on August 19th alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2 and that this holiday will see the release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
