3DS Update Includes Folders, Game Updating, And A New eShop Feature

Be sure to blow the dust off of your 3DS and turn it on today, as there is a new fancy pants update to feast your eyes upon. Unlike most firmware updates, this one actually has some interesting features.

The biggest one, and the one that has me the most excited, is the ability to organize your home screen into folders. I have hated the way Nintendo "organizes" software on their handhelds and consoles, as there has never really been a logical form of organization. For example, on my 3DS, I downloaded a trailer at E3, watched it, and then deleted it. Instead of automatically realigning my other downloads to fill this hole, the hole remained a hole. It drove me insane. Not to mention, the fact that I could not group like-games and apps together made the anal retentive me curl up in a fetal position and cry.

Each folder can hold up to 60 items, whether they are apps, games, or videos. Just think…I can organize all of my sucker ambassador program games into one folder! All eShop purchases in another! I won't have to scroll through the list ever again!

The eShop also got a smidgen of an update in the form of a personal shopper. Whenever you visit the eShop, it will recommend apps and games to you based on your past purchases.

Despite what I think is the biggest plus to the update, Nintendo most likely feels that the biggest update feature is the ability to update your 3DS software. Compatible titles can reeive patches, bug fixes, and new content, which means heyyyyyy there's another platform that won't require polished games. Why send a complete, unbroken game when we can patch it later? Heyooooooo….
