There’s a rumor going around that opening Pokemon TCG Pocket packs with a bent or folded corner increases your chances of getting good cards. However, there’s not a lot of hard data to prove this. Below, we’ll look at the claim and what we’ve found out.
Do bent corner packs give you better cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket?
It’s tough to get raw data on whether Pokemon TCG Pocket packs with a folded corner give better cards. Anecdotally, I’ve consistently gotten better cards from packs with bent corners, but that could be confirmation bias. Unfortunately, I haven’t recorded the contents of each pack I opened, so I don’t have any stats to prove or disprove the theory.
Additionally, the method Pokemon TCG Pocket uses to generate packs is still a bit of a mystery. However, it likely works in one of the following ways:
- The contents of all available packs are generated as soon as you choose the “Open a Pack” option.
- The cards in a pack are generated when you rip a pack open.
- The cards you’ll receive are the same no matter what pack you choose.
If the former is true, it’s more likely that there is a predictable algorithm as to which of the available packs are most likely to contain the best cards. If it’s the latter, it’s impossible for the pack you open to have an effect on which cards you get. Otherwise, it probably doesn’t matter which pack you choose.
There’s also the question of why this mechanic would be included in the first place. The only reason we can think of is that it takes time to examine packs for bent corners, which increases engagement time. Adding the folded corners mechanic could benefit the developers since that’s a metric for a game’s success.
The game also doesn’t have a traditional pity mechanic, so this might be its way of giving players a surefire way to get better cards. However, giving players a way to get higher rarity cards might lead to less money spent on gold, which wouldn’t make financial sense.
One thing is sure, though. Looking for bent corner packs doesn’t hurt anything. It’s unlikely that they give you lower odds for finding high-rarity cards, so it’s worth going out of your way to find the folded corner packs, even if there’s no definitive proof it increases your chances of getting better cards.
