FF7 Rebirth Does Aerith Live or Die

FF7 Rebirth: Does Aerith Die or Live?

We wondered if Aerith would die or live since we found out where FF7 Rebirth would end. Her death is a central point in the original game and ends up being the catalyst that allows the party to ultimately defeat Sephiroth. However, with the twists thrown in for the FF7 Remake trilogy, it seemed she might be able to escape her fate. We’ll take a look at what happens to Aerith at the conclusion of FF7 Rebirth below.

Does Aerith die in FF7 Rebirth?

FF7 Rebirth Does Aerith Die

Aerith does die in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. In fact, she dies quite a few times. When the party reaches the Forgotten Capital, Aerith begins to pray to the planet and assumes the iconic pose from the original that harbors her demise.

Events take their original course, with Sephiroth attempting to manipulate Cloud into striking Aerith down, but he once again resists. Sephiroth descends, intending to run Aerith through with the Masamune, but this time things go differently.

At the last second, Cloud deflects Sephiroth’s blade, saving Aerith. For a moment, things seem fine, but the Whispers intervene to restore the original timeline, and the Masamune impales her. Cloud then sees the scene play out in several different universes. In some, Aerith has been killed by Cloud or Sephiroth, but we never see one where she survives.

So, yes, Aerith dies in FF7 Rebirth’s prime universe and several other realities as well. It seems like if she makes it to the Forgotten Capital in a universe, then she is destined to die.

Does Aerith live in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

FF7 Rebirth Does Aerith Live

Yet, Aerith Prime does live in FF7 Rebirth. After Cloud and Aerith fall from the Temple of the Ancients, they’re transported into one of the alternate realities where Zack survived. In these universes, Cloud and Aerith are in a coma, and Aerith Prime hijacks their bodies temporarily. She gives Cloud that universe’s version of the White Materia to replace her drained one, and sends him back to the Prime universe.

It seems like she uses this same trick to avoid dying at the end of the game. While her body dies in the Prime universe, Cloud is able to see her. While it might seem like he’s crazy at first, I theorize that his possession of Aerith Prime’s drained White Materia allows him to see through the barrier between universes, evidenced by his witnessing the rift in the sky.

So, although she technically dies more than once, Aerith Prime is still alive, albeit in another reality.
