Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Can you return to Midgar

FF7 Rebirth: Can You Return to Midgar?

Though you’ve just escaped the big city at the beginning of FF7 Rebirth, you’ll likely get the urge to revisit Midgar during your journey. After all, there’s a lot of unfinished business you left behind, and both Marlene and Elmyra are still there. So, you’re not alone if you’re wondering if Midgar opens back up to you during FF7 Rebirth.

Can you return to Midgar in FF7 Rebirth?

In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you can’t return to Midgar. The game’s storyline moves forward, taking Cloud and his party to new locations and eventually to the western continent. Since the game follows the path of the original, it makes sense that re-entering Midgar isn’t a possibility.

Scenes set in Midgar do appear through an alternate timeline, but these do not offer interactive exploration. They serve more to advance the plot than to revisit old locations. Players looking forward to exploring Midgar again might have to wait for the trilogy’s third installment. If the party continues to follow the path of the original, they’ll end up in Midgar before the final fight in the Northern Crater.

While Midgar remains a key part of the narrative, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth focuses on introducing new areas and advancing the story. So, if you want to revisit Midgar, you’ll need to go back and play through FF7 Remake for now. Fortunately, if the third entry in the series retains the optional content from the original, you’ll be able to get a key that gives you access to Midgar through an exterior hatch. If this is the case, it’s possible we’ll get to find out what happened in the aftermath of the attack on the Shinra building. Additionally, it’d be great to see how the survivors of the plate collapse are fairing.
