The FF7 Rebirth Grasslands locked door will likely be the first time many players are blocked from progress. Slightly north of the Kalm Air-Raider Shelter exit early in Chapter 2, there is a grated, metal gate with a door that Cloud can’t get past. Searching around the area, there is no key or any obvious way to unlock it. Looking at the map, there doesn’t seem to be anything special past the area either, though if you climb the bluffs around the gate, you can clearly see a large gray building in the distance that’s past the door. Here’s how to open this locked door in the Grasslands region in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for PS5.
How to unlock FF7 Rebirth Grasslands locked door near Kalm exit
To unlock the door in the Grasslands area of FF7 Rebirth, you need to complete the protorelic world intel missions in the region and locate a key at the end of the third mission in the quest chain. Doing this takes quite a while, so here’s a list of steps you can follow to obtain the key to open the lock:
- Continue to the main story until you receive a note that there’s some mysterious activity occurring somewhere north on the open world map. This will unlock the World Intel mission “Phenomenon Intel 1: Wild Bandit Chase.”
- Travel to this first mission, located at a lighthouse overlooking the northern bay. Finish this mission and this will lead you to the next task called “Phenomenon Intel 2: One Badass Barbecue.”
- Once you complete the second mission, you will then gain access to “Phenomenon Intel 3: Diversionary Tactics.” Near the end of this third part, you can use a chocobo to unearth a key. (We won’t say what the name of this key is to keep this spoiler-free.)
- You can use this key to open the locked door and proceed to the final protorelic mission in the Grasslands region.
We recommend that you take your time getting through these protorelic missions since they are located all across the Grasslands map. There are numerous distractions along the way, so getting through this locked door isn’t a top priority. However, you will need to get through it eventually if you wish to gain one of many key items you need to obtain an optional summon later on in the game.
