Lords of the Fallen: What Happens if I Stay in the Umbral Too Long?

The Lords of the Fallen Umbral realm is another one of the game’s unique mechanics. This dark world not only sits on top of the regular one, but has its own set of rules. Here’s what happens when you stay in the Umbral for too long in Lords of the Fallen.

What happens if I spend too much time in the Umbral realm in Lords of the Fallen?

Staying too long in the Umbral has all sorts of side effects, which, depending on your perspective, can be both positive and negative. For one, you will get more vigor (which is your upgrading currency). This is clearly shown by a little multiplier that will tick up in the upper right corner of the screen.

Enemies will also constantly spawn in around you. You will often see little wispy ghosts, some of which will turn into actual foes. Many of these will be small grunts that only take a swipe or two to fell, but some are going to be more powerful threats. Not all ghosts will morph into an enemy you have to worry about, so you have stay vigilant.

But perhaps the most important part about the Umbral is the stalker enemy that will eventually come hunt you down. The enemy called the Scarlet Shadow will come after you once the eyeball in the upper right corner of the screen goes red. You can also see a faint outline around the eye that shows how full the gauge is. Once it fills up, which takes around seven minutes, a red shadow will erupt from the ground with the Scarlet Shadow.

This enemy removes your ability to heal, but it can be temporarily avoided if you’re near a vestige save point, which is where you can heal and catch your breath. You’ll notice that the eyeball in the right corner of the screen will close when he’s unable to get to you. However, it will come right back up once you get out of range.

The Scarlet Shadow doesn’t have much health and can be somewhat easily dodged and countered. Killing it will net you some Umbral Scourings and many thousands of vigor, but that amount seems to fluctuate. You will also get the Umbral Eye of Marco the Axe the first time you kill it, as well as the “A Shadow Dispelled” achievement or trophy. However, be warned, killing it won’t give you a permanent reprieve until you get to a save point since they’ll just keep spawning every few minutes.
