Baldur’s Gate 3 Savegame Load Failed Error Code 302 is one of several save issues plaguing the game. Unlike the problem players were having when the game launched, Error Code 302 has nothing to do with cross-play. Unfortunately, this BG3 save bug can cause you to lose a ton of progress, but the issue that causes it can thankfully be avoided.
What causes error code 302 in Baldur’s Gate 3
We saw Baldur’s Gate error code 302 appear when we quicksaved too much in a short period of time. You’ll be able to tell it’s about to occur when the game attempts to load as possible, hits 100%, and then restarts at 0% and attempts to load again. The game will then display, “Savegame load failed error code 302,” and then it drops you back to the main menu.
Fortunately, this bug only seems to affect certain saves. While we can’t be sure, it looks like it’s caused by autosaving while the game is already saving. Furthermore, the error only affects that quicksave. So, ironically, the best solution to this problem is to save often and don’t quicksave when the saving icon appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
The worst-case scenario here is that multiple saves become corrupt. While we’ve only experienced error code 302 when attempting to load a quicksave, but we don’t know that it’s impossible for a manual or autosave to display the same behavior. If this happens, your only recourse, for now, is to contact Larian support and see if they’ll repair your save. Unfortunately, we don’t have any evidence of this working out yet.
Baldur’s Gate Error 302, though concerning, is not insurmountable. Always ensure you’re running the latest game update, as developers often address known glitches. Having multiple save files can be a safety net. Periodically backing up saves externally or on cloud services can also be a protective step.
