Battlefield 2042 is set to shake up the series in more ways than one. Not only is it bolstered by current-gen hardware, but it’s also set in the future, when literally anything is possible. However, more grounded fans are wondering if Battlefield 2042 will include a battle royale mode. Unfortunately, the answer is a little bit complicated.
Will Battlefield 2042 have a battle royale mode?
According to game director Oskar Gabrielson, there are no plans to include a battle royale mode in Battlefield 2042. For better or worse, this means that the popular Firestorm mode will not be available in Battlefield 2042. However, the upcoming Hazard Zone mode may be based around the battle royale formula.
To reiterate, the developers at DICE aren’t planning on putting a battle royale mode into Battlefield 2042. However, comments made during a question-and-answer panel seem to imply the game may have something similar to a battle royale.
We speak, of course, of Hazard Zone. According to Gabrielson (via The Washington Post), Hazard Zone “is a squad-based, high-tension mode, a really kind of contemporary design.” He then goes on to say “It’s not your classic battle royale.”
This final line is the one causing confusion. Saying Hazard Zone isn’t “your classic battle royale” implies that the mode is at least comparable to a battle royale. And the name itself seems an almost direct reference to the standard BR formula. After all, battle royale modes typically involve a large number of players duking it out to remain the sole survivor(s) in a rapidly shrinking arena — a hazardous zone, if you will. Plus, there’s no rule saying that battle royales can’t take place among squads. Team-based modes are common game variants in both Fortnite and Warzone, the two most popular battle royales on the market.
No matter what Hazard Zone winds up being, DICE is adamant that Battlefield 2042 does not have a battle royale mode. Like it or not, but it seems Firestorm won’t be part of the new release. However, the Battlefield 2042 Hazard Mode could be comparable to a battle royale, even if it isn’t technically classified as such.
